We also have:

Parent - Teacher Meetings

There are 3 opportunities for parents to meet formally with their child's teacher each year.

  1. An information exchange is held in Term 1 to get to know new staff and families and to exchange relevant new information regarding children (years 1 to 6). All parents of children starting school at the beginning of each year are also invited to meet their child's new teacher to exchange relevant information.
  2. At the end of Term 2 following reports and individual portfolios going home, parents are invited to make a time to attend a Partnership Meeting. This meeting is an opportunity for the children to share and discuss their work and to discuss learning goals for the next half year. Including children in the discussions about their progress is in line with current educational philosophy and is a very powerful model of providing ownership and responsibility for one's own learning.
  3. At the end of Term 4 following reports and portfolios going home, if parents have any issues they wish to discuss they can make a time to meet with the class teacher.

Curriculum Information Nights

Curriculum nights are held early in the year to provide class teachers with the opportunity to explain curriculum and programs to parents. Throughout the year further information nights may be held on specific subjects.

Reports

Two written reports are sent home in June and December in order to provide parents with clear information on how their child is going at school.

Portfolios

Individual portfolios of children's work are developed each semester and sent home with the reports in June and December.

The portfolios include authentic, open-ended work tasks that relate to the units of inquiry that have been developed using the Essential Learning Standards and the Curriculum Standards Framework as a guide.

The tasks in the portfolio will indicate the skills and understandings that we seek to see demonstrated by the task. Because of our developmental philosophy, and the expected use of open-ended tasks, a range of skills and understandings would be listed to allow for the different levels at which the children are operating. On selected tasks comments will be made.

Why Have Individual Portfolios?

  • The children can see a purpose in the assessment and have a sense of ownership.
  • Portfolios provide evidence over a period of time and therefore show development and progress over time.
  • Portfolios provide a wide range of evidence for parents about their child's development.
  • The assessment is authentic and relates to what the children are doing in class.
  • The tasks in the portfolio show parents some of the work that helped the teacher make the decisions about the level they have awarded the child.
